Identical twins singing indie pop rock hits are what make the Watsons so irresistible. After pairing up with Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis for Rabbit Fur Coat, the Los Angeles based sisters are finally promoting their studio debut Fire Songs with a 2009 tour. Chandra and Leigh Watson released their full length debut in June 2008 with Vanguard and as the New Year sets out to be a great one, this indie folk duo is returning to the stage for their next set.
The Louisville, Kentucky girls made one of their best decisions when they headed over to the Los Angeles suburb Silverlake, home to indie rockers Orphan Train, Joe Firstman and members of Rilo Kiley. If you've found this indie rock movement home, enjoy opportunities found online as it embraces The Watson Twins tickets this year! The musical outlet, an area that cultivated Beck, Elliot Smith and Silversun Pickups, played an important role in the former church choir singers as they collaborated with Jenny Lewis for 2006's Rabbit Fur Coat. The album made the girls underground sensations as they racked up fans from Los Angeles nightclubs to country farm towns everywhere from Holland to Japan, for their infectious, girlie vocals that seductively invite everyone into their playground of funk.
As the Watsons began earning headlines via their tour with the Rilo Kiley front woman, they released the EP Southern Manners in 2007. The girls released the album themselves, allowing self-exploration, examining which genre fit them perfectly. Selling out local venues in the Los Angeles area, including the Getty Center, the girls continued their pursuit of true American spirit with festivals like Bumbershoot, Camper Campout, Pop Montreal and more. Reeling off the success of their single "Time of My Life" which appeared on ABC's Grey's Anatomy, the girls headed into the New Monkey and Everest Analog Records Studios in Los Angeles to record Fire Songs. With new insights into the girl's style as they embraced Silverlake's likeminded company, the album was their best yet.
Fire Songs is an album that incorporates a more mainstream style (the girls signed with the historic Vanguard Records) while still incorporating their own unique adventures. The album includes a poppy "How Am I To Be" and even a cover of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven. "For us, we try to write accessible music, which is I think where folk musicians come from. It's not brain surgery. It's just a common music charged by common emotions which everyone can understand," Chandra talks with Paste Magazine. "The type of music Leigh and I write has very simple chord structures and melodies. It's more focused on the lyrical content and our harmonies and is more concerned with making a connection with the listener. It's not the bells and whistles and figuring out how to make it weird or how we can put our funky little spin on it. We're just not interested in that."
